This book was so good and I cannot wait to read the rest of the trilogy!

Characters: We get so many morally grey characters (Kennit, Etta) and characters grappling with what to do (Althea, Wintrow), and even some straight up horrible characters. And Robin Hobb really dives into the idea that most people aren’t all good or all bad. There are a number of characters I still don’t know how to feel about. Except the live ships are great, I love them.
World building: Pirates! Sea serpents! Mysterious talking ships and wood. I may not exactly understand what’s going on with all of it but I can’t wait to learn more.
Plot: I am trying so hard not to look up spoilers because I want to know what happens! Who gets what ship? Who ends up with who? Who even survives through all of this?

The cliffhanger at the end is wanting, as the rest of events seems predictable. I hope the author will play on reader expectations in the rest of the trilogy.
