“Aren’t all the best adventures a little reckless?”

Once again, Carissa Hardcastle delivers the most relatable characters while making sure none of them get lost. Even the minor characters have me emotionally invested. I loved all the banter balanced perfectly with some of the darker elements of this book. Amongst a beautifully written found family trope we also get to explore the different ways we process grief. The spice was *chef’s kiss*. The action scenes were enthralling. Yet again, an emotional rollercoaster. I’m so happy there is a novella because I will never be ready to let go of this world.

Favorite Character: Bellamy, Shiloh

⛰️Jumping right into the aftermath of the previous book, after Orens death, we see our characters struggle with grief, anger, and denial. Mollian is thrust into the position of King, and Merriam is a complete ghost of herself. They wallow together in private, but ultimately Mollian has to slap on a brave face and go lead his people. His parents will become guardians of the gate that protects their lands from the outside forces, and his family is essentially torn apart by distance (or death).

⛰️We are introduced to a new character who I adored more than life itself, Ryddan! The shape shifting, half demon / half fae that was revealed in book one. Mollian and Merriam feel that he is safest in the kingdom with them, and he quickly draws everyone in with his sassy personality and different animal shapes. My favorite is when he is sleepy and turns into a tiny lizard for them to carry on their shoulders. Bellamy is promoted from the royal guard into...a royal babysitter. And from that relationship blooms a father - son dynamic that actually made me ugly cry!

⛰️The mercenaries play a huge role in this book again, as they help monitor any continuing threats from the demon realm, while also working out their own personal issues. There are romantic subplots that are cute and flirty, and help cut through the impending doom and tension of another battle.

⛰️Merriam actually ends up entangled in another romance which is hinted at, but happens really organically. Rovin and Merriam follow the enemies - friends - lovers pipeline without any cliches. Rovin admires Merriam the most when she is authentically herself, angry, feisty, murdering demons, swinging around blades, and so forth.

⛰️The action is upped significantly from the last book and there are a lot of "what the fuck" moments that are violent and unhinged. It all serves the point of character growth, and prepares the main characters for the upcoming war.

⛰️Without spoiling too much more, the final battle is very intense and showcases Mollian in a whole new light. His magic supercedes all others, and will 100% blow you away.

I miss these characters deeply, and if there was ever a way to immerse back into this world, I would be all in!

I think I will definitely be following any future publications from this author!

I don’t know what I expected after having my heart pulverized in the first book.

However this is the ending that makes the most sense, and eases the hurt that the first one caused.
