2.5 stars, rounded up.

I think this is a middle grade series that doesn't work as well for adults. I'm sure the target audience would love this story, but I found the twists far too predictable. This could have been a duology, but there's several more books that I may or may not read. I am intrigued about Rumplestiltskin and how he'll be portrayed by the author, so I'll likely keep going with this series at some point.

Magical / Fairy Retelling

Its an Okay story-line. Predictable villain.
Easy and Undemanding read.

I might continue reading the next in the series :)

Really really did not care for what Calonita did with Gilly's character in this second installment. It was a shame to see the series protagonist turn into a "cool girl" trope. Gillian's not like other girls - she doesn't like pink. She only joins the Royal Ladies in Waiting Club because she wants to find the mole at FTRS. She outfences Jocelyn despite having only ever pretended to fight with the fireplace poker at home. Gag.

My review of book 1: Flunked ★★★★

Reread July 2023:★★★★

This was just as fun and cute as the last book. I did feel like this one is a tad more predictable but I don't think it's a big issue. I love that we get pirates in this book, that's a weak spot for me haha.

The characters are really what makes this book work. They're funny, caring, sweet and passionate. You can't help but smile as they go on missions and deal with typical friendship drama.

This book definitely focus on what friendship means, how selfishness can hurt the people you care about and what really matters in life.

I recommend this middle grade series to anyone who loves the Descendants or The School for Good and Evil.
