I didn't realize this is a sequel until I started reading review here on GR. That explains it! The whole story felt like it was missing something, or like I was missing something. Obviously there's backstory there with which I am unfamiliar. Anyway, the illustrations are pretty but the story is just bizarre and unrealistic. I can obviously suspend my disbelief for a good fiction story, but sometimes it's just too much and this is one of those times. Perhaps if I'd read the original, but I think not.
