Andy Carpenter has been tasked with taking custody of a Bernese mountain dog who's owner was murdered, until such a time as the courts can settle the custody battle for the pup. It soon emerges that several people want to get their hands on the dog, and Carpenter and his friends are in the firing line.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as I have the last couple in the Andy Carpenter series. I think maybe because there was much less of the courtroom drama in this, and that's part of what I enjoy. That and the wit and humour, which thankfully was still present.

There's a lot of development in Carpenter's personal life in this one so that takes centre stage for some of the book. I do appreciate character development for series like these so it's good to have, and will be important for future books, but it did seem to take some of the limelight away from the crime side of things.

It's looking like dogs as clients might become a running theme for the series, at least in the short term. I thought it worked well the first time but not so much this time. I guess we'll see with the next one what the consensus is.

Andy is asked by a judge to determine custody of a dog whose owner has been killed. Then one of the people vying for custody is also killed and the other is suspected of being the murderer. Andy then becomes that person's lawyer. He is determined to get his client off and save the dog. The Clients father was working on a project he was keeping secret involving synthetic DNA. Several others are killed and Andy is getting more confused and trying to piece everything together.
During the investigation his girlfriend, Lori, is shot and Andy is traumatized by it. He has her stay with him during her recovery and asks her to move back to New Jersey. The rest of his team are also very involved in finding the real killer and protecting the dog. The dog is a puppy and very high energy and Andy's dog, Tara, gets along well with the puppy.
Another good mystery in this series. Full of lots of legal proceedings and Andy's smartass sense of humor.

Another great Andy Carpenter book. Tara has to share Andy with another dog that Andy has received from the court as a caretaker when the owner's will is contested. Murder and mayhem ensure. Andy and Laurie's relationship progresses. I truly enjoy these books, very light, comforting reads.

I actually read the hard copy book this time. It is probably easier to keep on top of all the characters when you vpcan see their names written down, but I did miss the narrator's voice.
