“Dat je zonder iemand kunt leven, wil nog niet zeggen dat je dat ook wilt.”
Dit boek lag al eventjes in mijn kast, dus het is niet meer zo nieuw. Maar heb je deze ook nog in je kast liggen? Begin er dan nu meteen in.
Wat een prachtig boek. Ik las nog maar 1 boek van TJR (De zeven echtgenoten van…) en was dus wel benieuwd of ik het ook zo goed zou vinden. Wat blijkt? Ik vond het beter! Echt vééééél beter. Oh echt wat een mooi verhaal.
Het boek gaat over Lauren en Ryan. Ze zijn al eventjes getrouwd, maar nu gaat hun huwelijk toch wel door een stevig dipje. Ze besluiten om 1 jaar uit elkaar te gaan en op geen enkele manier contact met elkaar te hebben. Het is een keuze van beiden, maar toch heeft Lauren het erg moeilijk met de tijdelijke breuk. Ze probeert er het beste van te maken en na een poosje lijkt dat ook wel te lukken. Zal dit jaar hen dichter bij elkaar brengen of juist definitief uit elkaar halen?
We lezen enkel het perspectief van Lauren en dat vond ik erg leuk. Het is echt raden naar hoe Ryan zijn jaar beleeft gescheiden van zijn vrouw. Lauren maakt zo’n mooie groei door. In het begin heeft ze erg veel verdriet en ik vond het op bepaalde momenten hartverscheurend om te lezen. Maar na een poosje verdwijnt het verdriet en maakt het plaats voor rancune. Ze wordt kwaad en beseft dat hun relatie al lange tijd niet meer lekker liep.
Er zaten zoveel mooie dialogen in dit boek, vooral tussen Lauren en haar oma. Het is dan uiteindelijk haar oma die voor het juiste inzicht zorgt bij Lauren zodat ze weet hoe de toekomst verder moet.
Ik kan dit boek alleen maar aanraden, ik zou het zoooo graag nog eens opnieuw lezen. Deze komt zeker in mijn top 10 van 2025.

After I Do is one of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s early novels. That doesn’t make it any less enjoyable, but don’t go expecting a huge number of characters, complex plots across time and Mick Riva.
The story is told from the perspective of Lauren, who is about to turn thirty. She’s been with Ryan for over a decade but their marriage isn’t working out. They argue all the time and it’s an effort to be in the same room together. They decide to separate for a year – no contact, do what you want and see who you want to see. For Lauren, it’s an opportunity to spend more time with her family and do things on her own. But she still misses Ryan, so she starts writing draft emails to him explaining her feelings which is a kind of therapy in a way. As the year draws to a close, Lauren needs to ask herself what she wants. Does she want or need in Ryan in her life?
This is a sweet story. It’s not life changing, but it’s honest. It takes the good with the bad of marriage as well as the feelings and logistics of separation. It’s not a romance either. It’s about a range of different loves – for family, for friends and for those who are in your life. It’s about improving the every day from saying you really hate pho to taking a life changing leap into a new career. All these things happen with Lauren and her family and it just seems so real. The characters are endearing, but not over the top perfect. Not everything is explained in minute detail either – Lauren’s parents are separated and she hasn’t seen her dad for decades. It’s just a fact, not something to obsess over. I really liked that. The focus of the book was on current relationships – growth or space. We don’t need to know everything about everything (although there was some repeated discussion about what I’d call ‘rat runs’ – taking the back streets of L.A. to avoid traffic and gain time).
The novel has a lot of feels, which readers of TJR will be familiar with. Happiness, sadness, awwww moments and some angry ones. The minor characters definitely bring those, such as Lauren’s grandmother (what a legend) and Natalie, Lauren’s brother’s fiancé. Overall it is a delightful story about personal growth and family that reads beautifully. The story is tight and it just flows, pulling the reader along with it.

When the sparks stop flying and the butterflies cease, what do you do? You choose to love anyway. Love isn't just a feeling, it is an action. I learned these lessons with my husband! Thank God it took a couple of weeks rather than a year. I loved the grandma. She gave sound advice. I also enjoyed the family dynamic. Great book all around. It made me cry!

i genuinely think this is the most amazing book i have ever read. taylor jenkins reid has stolen my heart and obliterated my emotions. after i do can be described as nothing less than a work of art. this is the most incredible story of love overcoming the odds but also of coming to terms with the reality that life is not a fairytale. i’m not sure i’ve ever been so moved by a book. as i’m only 18, i’m not sure i can even grasp all the lessons that this book teaches as i haven’t experienced the ups and downs of love and marriage, but i truly believe this is a book that i will remember for the rest of my life.
