*3.5

Vader Down marks the first crossover between Jason Aaron’s Star Wars and Kieron Gillen’s Darth Vader, and it does a damn good job of tying the two series together and showing off how well these two books have been running in tandem. Aaron and Gillen clearly spent a good amount of time mapping out their respective run so that scenes in the main book overlap in the sibling title, and after twelve issues this represents a bit of a payoff to the various plot threads that have been running concurrently.

Vader has been hunting for Luke, using Doctor Aprha’s underworld connections to dig up information on his whereabouts. Luke has been trying to further his Jedi training following Ben Kenobi’s death, and his journey has led him to Vrogas Vas. Vader has pursued him there and after a dogfight in the planet’s orbit, both Vader and Luke have crash landed.

There’s some neat competing threats here, as Aphra and her crew try to capture Luke to prove their loyalty to Vader. Meanwhile, Vader is forced to square off against a rogue contingent of Imperial soldiers under the command the General Grevious-like Karbin, who the Emperor has been grooming to take Vader’s place after the destruction of the Death Star. We get a number of cool sequences that show off Vader’s skills and capabilities as a Sith warrior, much to the detriment of the Rebel forces attempting to capture him. Vader’s a freaking beast here, and it’s a pretty marvelous display.

Since Aprha’s introduction in Gillen’s Vader series, she and her crew have felt a bit like the Dark Side answers to our heroes. Aphra’s the female Han Solo, Triple Zero and BT are the evil doppelgängers of C-3PO and R2, and Black Krrsantan is Chewbacca’s insidious mirror. Naturally we get some cool fight sequences and matching of wits, and even some darkly comical moments, as these figures square off.

All in all, this was a lot of fun and the authors and artists involved pulled a worthwhile and satisfying Star Wars miniseries event. Now, back to the main books...

How splendid. Did you hear that, Beetee? We get to torture and exterminate indiscriminately!

My first thought on Vader Down, is that the cover art is amazing. It drew me in immediately and made me want to delve straight into the story that the cover contained. I've always been a fan of the Dark Side, so to see Darth Vader drawn in such brilliance only made me tear up and love my space husband even more.

This comic opened with action galore, drawn so eloquently that it was beautiful. The colourist has done an amazing job on this piece, straight away. The author and the artist have done beautiful frames through this.

The emotions that ran through me during this were intense and unexpected. I didn't know how to react to what was going on through this comic, and I cried once or twice.

This was a beautiful comic and it ended with a spectacular cliff hanger. Definitely recommended to any Star Wars fan out there.

A fun read. Really enjoyed this graphic novel. And it’s cool seeing all the original characters together again.

I'm really happy I paid attention to reading order and got a hold of this one. I loved this volume, seeing the event from two sides. I thought it was a great crossover, and better yet, I liked the art from both artists. There's some pretty menacing or otherwise amazing panels. (Though Leia's face in one of the ones at the end? Not good).

I will definitely come back to this one.

This is the first crossover with Vader series and Star Wars main series.

Vader is pretty much god-like bullshit level here. He takes on like 50 goddamn ships, none can take him down, but then Luke charges in, and together they fall to the planet surface. Then Vader is surrounded by 100+ men and of course Vader takes them all on. While this is happening we have multiple plot points of Han Solo and everyone else on the run or trying to rescue someone. This is basically one big rescue mission.

Overall, this is highly entertaining because it's a super quick read and fun. I love the stuff with bullshit power level Vader because it's so over the top you have to. I also like that Luke ain't a punk in this. You get some pretty damn good fights too here. The art is solid on top of it all. Vader being OP as fuck though is kind of annoying at times and also the ending is kind of like...ok?

Overall pretty fun if not silly. A 3.5 out of 5, but I'll bump it to a 4.

Vader Down collects Star Wars: Vader Down, issues #13 - #14 of Star Wars (2015) and issues #13 - #15 of Darth Vader.

Vader Down suffers from the predictability that occurs when you write a comic (or even a book or movie) that when you put a main character in a spot that you think they might not get out of it, but then think but 'I know that they are alive in the next movie' etc. As much as I love finding out more of this new Star Wars universe (as all the old canon is now Legends and anything can happen), it is going to suffer from what the old canon suffered from; that we know the fates of the main characters that majority of people care about. This completely destroys any tension or anticipation that the writers are trying to create. To be fair, if we did not know their fates before reading any of these fill-in novels / comics, then it may be a different story.
For me the main let down for Vader Down is the facial expressions. I could totally see which facial expressions that they wanted (as majority of them are ones straight from the movies), but they just did not fit.

Like I said earlier, with knowing the fates of everyone it does take away any suspense for the characters but the story line was still interesting enough to make up for this. Vader Down follows Darth Vader after he crash lands on Vrogas Vas after following Luke to an ancient Jedi Temple on the planet. Of course, all chaos ensues with some new characters introduced, some not entirely necessary but some that I would love to learn more about (yes Triple Zero is just great).

Overall I would recommend reading Vader Down as it is giving some valuable backstory and conflict to the original trilogy characters.

I can't quite give this 5 stars as it's not a perfect story but there are a lot of great factors. Vader is in devastating form and all the characters collide in this adventure, mixing Dr Aphra and evil droids in with the rebels. There's even an evil wookie. The only negatives are the usual eg everyone will survive cos they're all in Empire. I would also add the pace of these comics is very fast due to little dialogue, although brilliant visuals. A recommended read!
