While I do really enjoy Hillerman's mysteries, for some reason I didn't care for this one as much. Of course this WAS #14 out of 18 Navaho mysteries and the famous Joe Leaphorn had just retired. It WAS good, just not as good as I've come to expect out of this series.

FINALLY Jim realizes he has feelings for Bernadette! At the very end of the book he realizes he has feelings for her! Now stop comparing her to your ex! The mystery was also really fun, loved all the twists and turns but I’m into these books for the characters

Great read with familiar characters, some humor amidst the mystery and, of course, an excellent setting. Love this series.

Lovely descriptive writing, good ethnographic info, and a detective story to boot

Instead of the plot, these are more enjoyable if you focus on the cultural detail and the description of the setting and people since the typical mystery is not set in the Four Corners region. We get lots in interesting tidbits about the culture of the Native Americans living there as well as the sometimes tense relationship with the non-Indians in the region.

I picked this up from one of the lending libraries in my neighborhood. When I lived in Albuquerque, my internship training director had recommended Hillerman's work as an interesting window into Southwestern culture. It certainly made me nostalgic for the Land of Enchantment! This is a pretty standard mystery in terms of plot and pacing, but the characters are interesting and funnily flawed, and Hillerman weaves a great deal of local tribal and political history into the finely-observed details. I'd definitely reach for another Hillerman next time I'm in the mood for a mystery.
