I read the first book about a decade ago. I put off reading the sequel because I knew that it would wreck me— I was right. I think right now was the perfect time to finally read it.

Once again, I adore the characters in this story. What a great tale of growing up and what it feels like to be a teenager. I also enjoy reading the perspective of someone different than myself - a Hispanic queer teenage boy fits that bill. I know this book will speak to so many young minds and hearts and that feels important.

Ari and Dante are just truly loveable and heartwarming characters. The relationships they build and the cast of friends are wholesome and life-giving and wonderful. I also felt like this book described so well the changing relationship of teens with their parents. This book is many love stories, and what a gift that is.

3.5, rounding to 4. I don't think this sequel was necessary, but I enjoyed reading more about Ari & Dante. I had to remind myself that it's YA, because the author really makes the lessons obvious. Ari is simultaneously too trusting and too conflicted, which is annoying. There's so many good people in this book that it feels unbelievable but they are written in a way that feels like you know them and really care for them. I was so invested that I teared up in a few places.
