DID NOT FINISH

It's just not for me. DNF 20%

I find the prose confusing rather than poetic.
I find the absurdism vexing rather than humorous.
I find the characters random rather than intriguing.

There's just nothing for me here. Every five pages I read starts to put me to sleep which harms my ability to read other books I'm more interested in afterwards. So I am officially putting this one aside.

I had written a little review and goodreads ate it. I'm not going to try to duplicate it, just a few notes.

I loved the contrast between the two stories in the book, the Master's novel about Pilate - totally realistic, and the escapades of Satan and his milieu in soviet Moscow - total fantasy. Occasionally the silliness and randomness of the Moscow story verged on being exhausting, but it was redeemed by a very subtle moral - that courageousness and grace in the face of nightmarish realities are probably the only reliable tools to get out on the other side relatively unscathed (and have a pretty good time in the process). If you're greedy, bureaucratic, demanding (unless you've earned it - then you MUST be demanding!), or fickle, life will probably run all over you. If you try to process its madness within the narrow framework of your expectations, it will annihilate your sanity - but take things as they come, on their own terms, and you might be okay.

I didn't really enjoy this. It felt intentionally convoluted and relied too heavily on symbolism to get its point(s) across. Not my jam.

Read the Karpelson translation.

Maybe the best book ever. It reads like a magnum opus because it is. I may update the review later to wax more poetic but just know that I love Behemoth more than words, as well as how much of Bulgakov's personal publishing beef is baked into this. Let em have it king
