I have a vivid memory as a child of this being the Narnia entry that made me stop reading the series as a child and boy do I understand why. The plot of this novel is meandering or non-existent. The way this book connects to the rest of the series is even more removed than The Magician's nephew. While I don’t love the Chronicles of Narnia I am grateful I kept going because this book is not a great representation of the rest of the work. Unless you are a die-hard of the series or want to lean into C.S. Lewis’s world-building skip this book.
So... this was racist. All the dark-skinned South Asian-esque people were selfish and greedy and awful, and seemed to have inferior food and names. They all sucked except for one girl, who I don't count just like I didn't count Shylock's daughter in The Merchant of Venice.
Apart from the racism, the book wasn't that interesting. I wasn't invested in the characters or their story. There were two things I liked. The first was going beyond Narnia, which we haven't gotten the chance to do, at least in the order that I'm reading the series in. The second thing I liked was seeing the Pevensies in the years they ruled Narnia. These are times even the kids barely remember, and I liked seeing what their lives were like then.
Overall, least favourite book in the series so far. I don't know how much relevance it holds to the series as a whole, but if it's not much (I'll get back to you about that), then I'd say skip it.

I don't mind the whole Jesus undertones of the Chronicles as I've encountered them as a child and didn't know much about that back then.
That being said, this one is very uncomfy, mostly because of the racist undertones. If you couple that with the Christian ones, it gets even more racist somehow. At least, when they get away for Calormen (just now realized the name, ehboy), it's a little less in your face all the time.
Overall, I also felt like none of the characters were likeable, except maybe King Lune, Tumnus and Hwin. Everyone was annoying in a way or another, first and foremost Shasta himself.
Now I'm still givin it a 3 because of the immense readability and the global tale-vibe that takes place in Narnia. It also somehow touched me here and there, when Aslan came and spoke to some of the characters, as his fluffy god-like papa energy somewhat soothed my grieving heart. In a weird way, I felt like he's watching over my friend whom I lost almost a month ago.

I read this because I'm trying to read the entire Chronicles of Narnia series in 2020. This was a fun adventure and I'm looking forward to seeing how it relates to the rest of the Narnian tales!
