a story about an orphan searching for his origins? a daring quest across a magical wilderness? alongside talking animal companions? and it’s also, very subtly, rivals to lovers? the horse and his boy is my favourite narnia book, and I will defend it with my life.

This book is extremely racist and outdated. I would recommend to anyone reading Narnia to just pass it by as it is non-essential to the overall chronicles.
I have thoughts on this one. I gave the other books so far 4 stars, mainly because I really enjoyed the stories, but the really obvious and omnipresent christian analogies are just not my cup of tea.
But this one... Is quite problematic. There is the really racist/xenophobic and stereotypical portrayal of the black people in the south, who are cruel, uncivilized, malicious barbarians who own slaves and abuse their animals, and then there are the white, fair, graceful and kind people in the north. Was quite difficult to read, actually.
Also, there is a heavy case of "not like other girls" going on with Aravis, especially in comparison to her friend we meet in the city. I don't know about you, but that mindset is not something I would want to be portrayed to children.
The story also kind of really dragged, for some reason - though the book is merely 170 pages long.
And I'm not going to lie, part of why I didn't enjoy this one as much as I did some of the others is probably because there is no movie, which just makes it harder to imagine everything. Yes, I am like that. Sorry.
I'll still give it two stars, though, because it is generally a nice story and there is at least some nice character development, though it sometimes works out a bit too easily in my opinion.
