This was INTENSE. All Abi wanted was to live her life in peace but her brother in law had other opinions on the matter. He manufactured claims that she was a witch bringing the trials to their little village. This was beautifully written and at times heart wrenching. TW there is death of a pet.

First and foremost; check your trigger warnings for this book. It deals in very heavy topics and there are some fairly graphic scenes, particularly later on. For whatever reason arachnophobic is not a trigger on here - but I am warning you know, arachnophobes, beware.

That being said, this was a work of art. I don't tend to lean towards historical fiction but this captured me and kept me enraptured from the very beginning until the brutal end. The writing is phenomenal, the characters have so much depth, and the depiction of friendship between the two protagonists is so wholesome, I think I could read another 7,000 pages just about them just hanging out.

A man(?) who yearns is a weakness of mine and this certainly provided. Tragedy, triumph, more tragedy - this book was up and down and up and down in the best possible way. Abitha is one hell of a lead (pun intended ๐Ÿ’™). She is a paragon of resilience, strength, and feminine rage. She artfully overcomes each and every single challenge lobbed her way all the while remaining true to herself.
The entirety of this book was magic the whole way through and what I wouldn't give to experience it all over again for the first time. And might I add: good๐Ÿ‘for๐Ÿ‘her๐Ÿ‘!!!!

"Praise you, sweet creature, you have released me."

Usually, I'm not too much of a fan if when books seemingly swap genres/ direction part way through, but the way this switched from something that felt like a folklore fable to a 'good for her' horror just did something for me.

At the start, Samson reminded me in a way of Frankenstein's monster (stay with me) with his questioning his identity, who he is, and why people fear him. Him realising his true identity and purpose was a slow story, but with how it was interspersed with his friendship with Abitha, and her troubles, it worked.

The horror switch towards the last third almost threw me off,
but I think how Samson still clearly loved Abitha despite her changing
kept it in the five star realm for me.
