That being said, this was a work of art. I don't tend to lean towards historical fiction but this captured me and kept me enraptured from the very beginning until the brutal end. The writing is phenomenal, the characters have so much depth, and the depiction of friendship between the two protagonists is so wholesome, I think I could read another 7,000 pages just about them just hanging out.
A man(?) who yearns is a weakness of mine and this certainly provided. Tragedy, triumph, more tragedy - this book was up and down and up and down in the best possible way. Abitha is one hell of a lead (pun intended ๐). She is a paragon of resilience, strength, and feminine rage. She artfully overcomes each and every single challenge lobbed her way all the while remaining true to herself.
The entirety of this book was magic the whole way through and what I wouldn't give to experience it all over again for the first time. And might I add: good๐for๐her๐!!!!
"Praise you, sweet creature, you have released me."

At the start, Samson reminded me in a way of Frankenstein's monster (stay with me) with his questioning his identity, who he is, and why people fear him. Him realising his true identity and purpose was a slow story, but with how it was interspersed with his friendship with Abitha, and her troubles, it worked.
The horror switch towards the last third almost threw me off,
