Another gripping and well-researched book about women’s phenomenal contribution at wartime. There are many sad parts of a book that takes place during a war, but perhaps one of the saddest was that these brave female telephone operators, though inducted into the military, were never recognized as veterans of WWII.

I'm so glad this author tackled covering the Switchboard Soldiers who are so often forgotten. I was telling my husband about these women and how long they had to wait to get the recognition they deserved and he was stunned.
While a fictional account, the author did a great job bringing the stories of real women to the fore through her fictional characters. The author did a great job researching this and a great job bringing it to life. I enjoyed reading this one, and I would recommend it. Stories detailing women's contributions that have too often been forgotten are some of my favorites. This is no exception.

Great premise of first women in the American army, but didn’t dive super deep into the characters or the qualms of war where there was opportunity too. Lots of things started, but not saw through. Lots of WWI info, but an interesting perspective. Could have gone faster/been shortened, or if going to be this long to dive into characters, the issues mentioned, or storylines in more depth.

This book came out stronger than I expected. My concerns are: I thought it was a slow start and still think it’s too long and the teaser makes it sound like the perils of war will be more impactful than they end up being. I ended up really caring about the characters and the journeys they were on. I also thought it was a very detailed accounting of the history of the war for a novel.
I do think the chapters stay underdeveloped and weaker, Grace never ends up feeling like a full character and Marie just likes singing?, and some plot points seem important but get dropped, like the nurses at the front hating the operators? I think one less narrator might have solved some of these weaker points and allowed more depth in the main characters and supporting characters that fleshed out the whole novel.
At the end of it all, I enjoyed reading it and I don’t usually read WWI novels, so that was a fun departure

Me? Enjoy a historical fiction book centered around badass women? Couldn't be. What an excellent novel, highlighting an oft forgotten about cohort of soldiers.
