Really cute book, love her work.

I say 5, the kid says 4.

From the viewpoint of a cat, yet realistic. Cute story. I probably read this as a child, but for some reason it didn't stick with me as much as Ramona or Ralph the Mouse.

I read this book (this copy!) when I was young and it only fueled my love for cats. I was desperate for a kitten, and the way Cleary brought Socks to life made me want a cat friend more than ever. I finally got my cat when I was an adult - and I have the kid, too! Re-reading this book now made me glad I didn't have a kitten and a baby at the same time. My cat is definitely as playful as Socks and has a very similar personality, so reading about the reasons why litter is scattered over the floor made me laugh.

Though I read this as a kid, it almost seems like a book for any age. The Brickers, who adopt Socks, are a young married couple having their first child, so I think the book could resonate with readers of that age as well. Even as an adult past that stage, I genuinely enjoyed the book for the story it told more than for nostalgia's sake, so I think this is one that could appeal to a broad audience. I feel like it's often overlooked in the scope of Cleary's catalog, though.

This sweet little book is about a kitty who finds himself with a loving family, and everything changes when a baby joins the family. I've had it since I was a kid and tried to get my 9 year old who is reluctant to read to read it, knowing it would be an easy read for him. Well it was a bust, he didn't read it, but I picked it up and had a nice nostalgic read.

Likes: I believe that animals have feelings as acute and real as human beings do. Reading this reminded me to be a bit more mindful of my pets and how they might perceive my actions. I know that will seem silly to some people, but it's what I think :)

Dislikes: There's nothing here to dislike, it's a sweet little middle reader.

I read this when I was a kid and loved it. I read it again and still love it.

I love Beverly Cleary so I'm not sure how I missed this one about a cat who must learn to share his home with an attention-grabbing intruder...a human baby, who proves is worth to the sulky jealous kitty in the end. It's Cleary's only book told exclusively from an animal's point of view (though we do see a lot of the world according to Ribsy the dog in the Henry Huggins stories) and it's just charming..

I liked it, but I didn't LOVE it.

Beverly Cleary's books are the kind that you can pick up and have done in a short time.
I've always liked Mrs Rizley. She's really sweet and motherly, even if you only get a glimpse of her. Nana really isn't, though. I always disliked how she treated Socks, but the whole worrying-if-he-will-hurt-the-baby thing was understandable. Charles William was adorable, of course.
Honestly the only dislike was how they treated Socks after Charles William's arrival. It's understandable that they put the pet to the side, but still sad.
