I don't really know what to say about this one or how to rate it. It was what I was looking for, but needs many, many CW/TW. The content is so graphic the author puts a disclaimer herself. If degradation/humiliation k!ink isn't your thing, this is not the book for you. I was surprised that the issue of consent comes into the plot at all. The female lead also grapples with her desires and shame, mostly feeling proud of who she is unapologetically, but also still feeling the external pressure from her ex and society. The male lead is amoral and at the same time very caring. He would probably qualify as a sociopath (he kills for a living for eff's sake), but the tenderness he shows Raylee is surprising and touching. He highly intelligent, knows right from wrong, he just chooses to live life on his own terms and is virtually untouchable since he's filthy rich and basically above the law because of his resources. I really enjoyed his posse too. Of course, this plot/characters have issues with possessiveness and jealousy, which are immediate red flags outside of this book. I would not encourage nor condone anyone participating in a dynamic like this irl. We don't see any discussion or negotiation about terms/safety. There's way too much emphasis on intuition and reading body language, which can be extremely deceiving/misconstrued. If the audience doesn't already understand how power exchange dynamics should be done (with safety as the #1 priority), this is a dangerous story to publish. The sort of safety Colton gives Raylee is still misguided and trope-y and ironically would not actually promote safety irl, and yet I ATE. IT. UP. Feeling like I do understand power exchange dynamics more or less helped me suspend disbelief enough to sink in and enjoy this novella for what it was: a fun, smutty, k!nky romp. I don't know if I'd say it's "light" due to the graphic scenes of CNC, r*pe, violence/torture, and murder, but for me, it was a form of escapism I was looking for.
If you get offended or triggered easily THIS ISNT THE BOOK FOR YOU. But for my fellow freaks, buckle up. Shantel kills it every time I swear. I just love the way she writes. This takes place in the same world as The Ritual but different characters. I found this book to be a teeny bit less plot heavy, more spice heavy but I was still enraptured from start to finish. I literally neglected all my responsibilities and read it in one shot. Colton is so deliciously complicated and his degradation is spectacular

Dark! So Dark!
Be warned the this story is dark and has a lot of triggers in it!
This story had a lot going on and at times was a bit hard to read but my lord I could not put it down! This book is not just a little dark! It is a dark dark romance.
Being in both Colts and Raylee's heads you see both perspectives! I didn't believe Colt could be redeemed but that ending

Ok whoa… so going forward I will be reading all TW be issue I was not mentally prepared for this book, and is it was very intense and you know I wish I was a little bit more prepared for that.
Colton my lord.. when he said he’s touch her and d!e he meant that shit.
Taylor while typically I can relate to the FMC, I can’t say the same for her, however I appreciated how she stood 10 toes down on her personal beliefs about what she wanted.
These two stressed me out real bad but I still want to go back and start the series from the beginning
