Cheever by Blake Bailey

It's a hell of a thorough read--especially if you're not quite familiar with the man or his work.

Reading a comprehensive, explicitly detailed, no-holds-barred and no-stones-unturned sort of biography certainly has its benefits. You know more about a complete stranger than you might ever know about anyone, not counting yourself or a long-time partner.

Suffice to say, the man had a way with words even when his self-loathing and insecurities got the bitter---or better--of him.

Bailey channels Cheever's voice in fine fashion, even when there's passages evoking nothing more poignant than a rolling of one's eyes.

Excellently written, excellently depressing. Says as much about being a writer in the 20th century and about America than it says about Cheever.
