A very interesting book, for being a tie-in. You don't have to be a fan of M:tG to love it. These yellowed pulpy pages tell an epic thrill ride is girded with a tight plot and stocked with with surprisingly deep characters. This series introduces one of my favorite antagonistic races of all, the Phyrexians.

The long-anticipated invasion of Dominaria starts off with a bang on multiple fronts. Planar gates open up across the world and horrific, genetically twisted and mechanized troops spill out over New Argive, Tolaria, Zhalfir, Llanowar and others. I remember at the time a friend of mine looked at a card which had a bristly mech-soldier with a fantasy-modified AK in its arms and exclaimed "the Phyrexians have automatic weapons?! They've gotta go!"
It's true, Phyrexia had reached a pinnacle of ridiculous, modern evil. But, there's going to be a lot of fighting, surprising turnabouts and losses, and grief before Yawgmoth and Gerrard face each other.
