This novel gets 5 stars purely on the strength of that lesbian happily ever after. I have been waiting since Out of Oz for Rain to come out and realize that it’s okay for her to be with a woman.
Thank god for Liir, and his sweet advice on love and sexuality.
I just wish that the last portion of the book was… well; the entire book! I think the kooky Maracoor adventure was meaningless. I understand the death-into-life spell that Rain cast at the island of Ithica Strand was probably crucial to her becoming a witch, learning that the Grimmerie is, after all, not a wicked book but just a magic tome… and I liked that scene… and I thought it was nice that she and Lucikles proved themselves alive in the bed of eternal flowers - BUT I HATED the following portion where they simply continued to be lovers!
What?
Lucikles is the most unlikable character in this trilogy, and Rain was still obsessed with her idea of the vanquished Tip at that point. It was uncomfortable to read, and meaningless!
Even more bizarre was the reunion with the flying monkeys, when Thilma berated Rain for her affair with a married man. I wondered if this was some sort of comment on the Elphaba/Fiyero relationship? Except in that relationship, Elphaba and Fiyero at least appeared to love each other. I hated the Lucikles/Rain section of the novel with all my heart.
The power of Ozma’s unabashed embracing of femininity and womanhood, along with her desire to continue to be with and love Rain, is the only thing I ever could have wanted. The only thing I ever could have asked for in addition? If they were lesbian mommies, too. If only Rain had smuggled one of those eggs away from Iskanary.

This series was well-written but felt utterly pointless. Do love Liir, though.
