I wanted a slightly different story, probably a longer one, but I can understand that the author didn't think that was neccessary.

A story written around a change. What does a soldier, a mother, a family owe to their country, their emperor? The gender changes make the decision even starker. I enjoyed all the worldbuilding details and the story was about deciding what was an acceptable sacrifice.

I liked a lot of this story, but I find babies being injured really difficult to read which is the main reason I didn’t love this story in the same way I’ve enjoyed other work by Harrow. (The baby is fine! I just hate the thought of people hurting babies because they’re so defenceless.) That said, I did enjoy the way this story tackled gender roles and I really enjoyed Harrow's writing.
