Sergeant Sharpe, having emerged from the previous battle (in Sharpe's Tiger) a very rich hero, quickly regrets having let rival Sergeant Hakeswill live. Surviving a terrible massacre, Sharpe i While the descriptions of maneuver and positioning of the armies are sometimes difficult to visualize, once the battle is joined, no one does better bringing you into the sights, smells, and sounds of the fight. Sharpe spends a great deal of this story observing the action around him but somehow that makes his crucial test all the more powerful. The author is adept in portraying Sharpe as he had to have been-- unsure of himself in the world or refined officers and gentlemen-- but of such skill and character to naturally rise and gain notice. The struggle-to-the death

Nice good hearing. William Gaminara does a wonderful job. The story is also appealing and the description of the battles is amazing. Bernard Cornwell seems to have a way describing those.

Sharpe's adventures in India continue with another thrilling adventure of battle and derring-do. I've still to be as gripped by these India novels as I was with the later Spanish and French campaigns, but there is still plenty to enjoy, particularly seeing Sharpe's later character starting to form. This book also includes one of the pivotal moments of Sharpe's story, and for that alone is worth the read.

As good or better than the first, with all of its strengths and faults. Dodd is a compelling character, and Hakeswill is deepening into one himself. Sharpe is still rather flat.
