Marillier is an unfailing favorite, with her lush setting in ancient Ireland and fully fledged characters that face heart-rending decisions. This is a noteworthy beginning to a new series about a young woman who is both gifted musician and elite warrior.

This book is a 2.5 rounded down. I found it mediocre in general. The characters felt aggressively YA and the story was pretty paint by the numbers. The ending was tremendously anti climatic and a lot of the “mystery” was told instead of showed leaving it unsatisfactory. Did not get a lot of “warrior barding” either.
