***4 STARS!***

THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN! I can totally see this being made into a movie. I really enjoyed the cozy aspect of this and it truly is a perfect winter read. I love the Victorian era so this gets extra points for taking place during that time and also having fantasy elements, which make it even better. Just like with my previous read "The Jumbies" this is also a book that reads like a standalone but has two more books after. I do not feel the need to read on with those so I'm fine with this being a standalone story to me and I find I've been loving standalones even more lately. So if you're looking for a cozy, chilling, fantastical, and heartwarming read for winter, pick this one up. - R.

This was a quick charming fairy tale about an orphan who gets adopted my distant relatives and moves to a big dusty house where everyone is in mourning for the missing boy who used to live there. He’s been captured by fairies ! Our young, spunky female heroine is determined to rescue him with the help of a taking clockwork crow who has some magic of his own.

It’s like The Secret Garden plus fairies.

An ok story. I personally believe this could have been an amazing horror novel. It’s clear the author works on poems due to the size of the book as, even with its enhanced text size, the book is very short. A missed opportunity if you ask me.

The Clockwork Crow has a very classic feel, probably because of its historical Welsh setting. It reminds me of The Secret Garden or Tom’s Midnight Garden, both of which have a special place in my heart. When Seren is sent off to live with her uncle, she’s hoping for a new life, filled with family and a home she can truly call her own. But what she gets is a drab and lonely existence—the young boy of the house has been missing for a year and everyone but a few servants has abandoned the house. The most exciting thing about her new life is the mechanical crow a mysterious man left with her at the train station. Seren won’t stop until she’s uncovered the mysteries of the magical crow and Tomos’s disappearance, and then she heads off on a quest to save him. The story is beautifully told and full of wonder, perfect to pass along to any child who likes to imagine a world just beyond their own.

Cute winter tale of persistence and magic. I think it’s a good choice for elementary students. They will enjoy the crotchety crow.
