brilliant. the ending felt a little didactic. which makes sense. Ani Kayode Somtochukwu is primarily an activist, and it jives that his first novel would be an argument for activism as a necessary mode for life. the ending while not feeling unearned, however, seems to buck against the style of the novel. it feels too neat, too pat. if this is where Ani was going, a different style might have been better. none of this detracts from its necessity as essential reading for anyone trying to understand queer African life as resistance.

A good book. I learned about queerness in Nigeria, which I didn't know anything about before. Very, very sad though.

this was a heavy read about the pain and struggle of being gay in modern Nigeria. i really appreciated how the author steeped this book in the politics of Nigeria (and the politics of liberation the characters were seeking). 

I loved Segun so much, and wish we got more of his POV- the book didn’t feel balanced between Segun and August. the pacing of the book overall also felt a little off, but i would definitely definitely read more from this author in the future!!
