There were some lines I really liked in this book, but also many that made me roll my eyes. Once you get used to the lack of quotation marks it's quite an easy read but I definitely wouldn't have got through it so quickly if I wasn't constantly wondering 'why is this book so popular?'; which really was what motivated me to keep reading. Overall this book was fine, it wasn't overwhelmingly good or bad 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve finished Normal People by Sally Rooney in only a few sittings and was determined it wouldn’t get past three out of five stars for me, but the lonely tear I shed at the end of the book had me giving it a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating. At first I had to get used to the lack of quotation marks whenever direct speech was incorporated into the story, which remained confusing albeit a little less as I continued. However, this is one of those books that will get you invested in its main characters since the reader gets to see both the events happening in their lives as well as the way Connell and Marianne look at life. You can’t really tell whether you like them or not, but you wish them well; after all, you know what goes on inside their minds and what has happened to them. You wish them well despite, no, because of their flaws. Because everyone’s flawed and so are you, and if they can find happiness, maybe it’s meant for you too.

Everything about this book felt so intense and complicated, even the ending, and I have to add that this is one of the books I believe should actually come with a few trigger warnings, maybe, if you’re not in the best place to read about certain issues.

When I read the first page of the book I almost put it down. Why? Because I was really bothered by the stylistic choice to not use quotation marks to indicate dialogue. However, I soon found out the style made me more attentive to what was actually happening, it felt calm and relaxed in a way that felt like easy, informal conversation between friends, and it spoke to who the main characters are. All that aside, I couldn’t get back to the book quick enough. I read it in two days; on my lunch break, after work, in brief moments in between one thing and the next. I have to assume this obsessive reading can be attributed to the main characters. I did not love them. I did, but they also drove me a bit mad. I, of course, kept flipping pages to see how it would end. But there’s something else to the book, that I can’t quite nail down, that possessed me to devour its pages they way I did. With that being said, the ending was so abrupt and felt unresolved. But maybe that’s the point? The type of will-they-won’t-they story this was sort of had me knowing from early on the outcome. Beyond the main characters, we also got a look at some really interesting minor characters; they weren’t just background noise. I wasn’t absolutely blown away by this book, nor did I have some deep emotional response or revelation. But something has to be said for just how obsessively I thought about this book when I wasn’t reading it and how quickly I finished it.

Hit me like a ton of bricks. It's probably not for everyone, but it really resonated with me.

PS. I found the blurb to be misleading/non-representative of the vibe of the book, best ignore it.
