Beautiful and sad, and so powerful given everything that’s been happening in park encampments in the west during the pandemic. For most of the book I didn’t realize the main character was a ghost since I didn’t read the synopsis - I just assumed he was invisible to the people around him, the way we always turn our heads or look at our phones when confronted with homelessness. Not sure if that was intentional..?

I read this in two sittings, but I bet it is perfect read in one. Beautifully written, I felt like I was aching the whole time I read this. Living in SLC and now in Seattle, the aggression directed towards unhoused people is unsettling and cruel. I loved reading something so much more humanizing that aligns with my own views, rather than the discourse flooding local forums. I’m sure some people may find the book obvious, but spend a weekend with my in-laws and you will treasure the tender love and care that Miri Yū took with this story.
This book just really resonated with me in subject, while the writing and narration made me feel disjointed in time and space. I have never read Miri Yū’s writing before, but this book left me wanting more of her heartbreaking and rich prose.
