Sad, calm and devastating. Like Life.

Interesting buildup. Mysterious main character. Lots to interpret while also learning about Japanese culture (?) around mourning, homelessness, the impact of Fukushima tsunami. All packaged in a sometimes moving portrait of a homeless man.

Definitely makes me want to read more from Yu Miri!

A quietly stunning examination of the psychological effects of loss. All kinds of loss.

Reads like an especially long poem in many ways. Might require a certain level of knowledge of Japanese culture and history to really understand. Best read in one sitting in my opinion.

Sadness on a whole other level. I kept on flipping the pages—every page is full of emotion. I was unable to check the synopsis, but was drawn in the cover, it has a mixture of light, dark, and just conflicted due to its abstractness. The main character draws us closer as he narrates his life and his family, particularly him dealing with emotion. His narration became monologues on life and death. Each page filled with his stream-of-consciousness, readers will venture upon grief, Buddhist culture, narrative of the great Tsunami that erased everything dear to him.

You won’t be able to put this book down. I love this. I love the part of him dealing with his own grief, unable to express himself in times when he needed it the most.
