I really enjoyed this! To me it was a good old-fashioned space opera, first contact, time travel sci fi story. The aliens were unique. There were characters I cared about. At times the characters & their interactions seemed a bit juvenile & dated but I’m still giving 5 stars because I think this deserves better than its current 3.8 rating.

Good example of the genre

Pretty fun sci-fi. Interesting plot. Reads a lot like a star trek script. Not as good as some of the later Sawyer books.

Unsophisticated. Main character is a paper doll going through midlife crisis. Aliens are too human to be interesting. Writing is uninspired.

It started of weak and b-story like and then worked itself up to some amazing page turning middle part to then just end in some fizzle micro ending.

Not bad, but could have been much better.

Finished the book in one evening, could not put it down. It has everything i want in a scifi book: Aliens, wormholes, timetravel, black holes, lasers, exploration and grand ideas.
Good one.

I really liked Starplex, even though it is a bit of a whirlwind! The book has all the space, aliens, politics, relationships, time, and big-picture questions you could want. There's a lot of similarities that can be drawn to Star Trek, which the author notes in his intro, but it's not overwhelming and it's in the same way any "realistic" hard sci-fi would. While the two alien species were ridiculous in their difference to humans, it wasn't overly distracting and really did a good job setting up the inter-personal and inter-species relationships that drive the story. The Canadian elements were also quite fun, and at times unexpected. The time travel elements were HUGE, almost too hard to comprehend, but interesting and challenging and wrapped up well at the end. All in all, the book does what the author said he wanted to do, and I'd recommend it for anyone interested in good sci-fi (especially short ones that don't take a huge amount of commitment).

Really interesting book. Based on real science too.
