I don't really know how to describe this book, but I liked it. Something about it made it engaging and immersive, also the description of thise times really teleported you through Eva's eyes. Compared to other FMC's in all books, she really feels like a real life human with the basic human flaws.

it reminded me a lot of 'the familiars'

a book with a main plotline relatively about nothing, its secondary plot too serious a real matter to be placed alongside the 'fantasy'

Chilling book set on the brink of ww2 in Italy about a piano teacher who doesn't want to believe what is happening and pretends to be Italian to stay safe until there is no choice but to leave

I have many thoughts about this story that I cannot put into words so I will try my best to still share some of them.

The story takes place in Italy, right before World War II begins. Already with those details, you can imagine a lot of infuriating scenes.

Eva is so stupidly naive and a coward so it’s hard to feel too compassionate about her most of the time because…bestie, on god, how are you surprised Dante is a bigoted fascist with everything he had already been saying and why haven’t you been listening to your friends…

At her big age and with her own ethnic cleansing trauma, you’d expect a wiser behavior…and yet. But anyways, as the story is her point of view, you still feel for her through the events, because despite her (un)willingness to deny the undeniable, she still goes through unfair and saddening moments that a lot of women have been through and continue to go through.

Lastly, I want to say that, personally, Ettore is the most relatable character and he deserved the world.

Well written- the characters are well rounded, the settings well described- you get that sense of seeing it on screen as you do with skilful writing with detailed and believable observations. Eva’s asides to the reader eg; ‘if I’d known then..’ etc got a little too repetitive. Of course this is a technique to intrigue the reader and let them know a little of what’s to come but I felt this was used too often and then not followed up by anything dramatically different. The series of events is a runaway train and the reader knows exactly where it’s headed.
Eva’s friendships with Mirella and Ettore are delightful and heartwarming and we explore a diverse range of characters. The novel is slow moving and the reader is screaming at Eva throughout and yet she keeps dragging out her decision making. It’s hard for the reader to understand why she marries Dante and why she doesn’t tell him the truth. <Spoiler>/ then as she begins to understand how dangerous Dante is, the reader can’t believe she doesn’t play the game of being compliant until she can escape.
The supernatural happenings are quite odd and in my opinion, not quite scary and suspenseful enough. It’s almost presented in a rather matter of fact way and because the novel doesn’t really have any of the hallmarks of the ghostly, gothic or thriller genres, it jars a little and the reader is waiting to hear the reasonable explanation.
It’s odd to me that Massimo is brought in as a threat but the author then makes little use of him. Especially when it seemed it was insinuated that Eva was fearful he may sexually assault her.
In my version, Chiara drugs Dante with sleeping pills then frees Eva. They try to escape but massimo is there to stop them. Then the supernatural burning of the house could happen, trapping both Dante and massimo.
I also think eva’s son should have been called Ettore rather than Gabriel.
