A novel about 1938 Rome, where the young pianist Eva Valenti navigates a world at the brink of war while seeking refuge in the home of widower and new husband, Dante Cavallera. But as she enters his home as his new wife, strange happenings begin to take place, and Eva begins to wonder what mysteries are hiding in the walls. She soon discovers that she and the people surrounding her, and not what they seem.

While a concept with much promise, unfortunately, this book fell flat for me as it reads like two separate stories - one about fascism and politics and the other more gothic and ghostly.

As two separate stories they hold up well, Anna Mazzola writes beautifully, and the gothic sections of the novel really stood out as atmospheric and eery. While the historical aspects were well thought out and explored an interesting perspective on the war. However, the two don't merge in the way I expected them to. Additionally, the ending was so ambiguous that I wasn't satiated by the explanation surrounding the book's supernatural events.

By no means is this a bad book; it was a quick, enjoyable read, but it was not what the synopsis presents.
