This book was really hard to read, and although I know it’s a beautiful and impactful story, I found the things described in it to be far too graphic for me. As someone who has experienced some of what is mentioned in this book, the beginning of chapter 7 was really difficult to read and due to recommendations from friends who had read more, I decided I couldn’t handle the lengths this book went. I was reading this for school and had to talk to my teacher and make an exception (and she is beyond amazing for being so accommodating with it) so this was not a light decision. However, if you can handle it, the writing is beautiful and impactful. It will be an experience to read for you and I recommend you to try it if you are able to tolerate what’s in it. Keep in mind the content warnings are understatements for the most part.

i love this book. Aside from seeing Amir's growth as a character, it was the setting that helped me to be more immersive and understanding of why these characters are the way they are. this book is worthy of my time and my money.

This book made me incredibly emotional. I wish I read it sooner. Really satisfying read, excellent character development, and the writing was beautiful and haunting. I absolutely could not put this book down when I was reading it.

In the beginning, I didn't think that Amir could be redeemed after what he did to Hassan but I was wrong. The sacrifices that he made got Amir to a place where he was able to forgive himself for what he did and make it right. I adore how Hassan continued to see the good parts in Amir even when Amir treated Hassan so terribly. Hassan knew his place in the world which, unfortunately, made people like him, Hazaras, perceived as less than human and treated like slaves. Hassan still treated those that did him wrong with respect and kindness and he passed that on to Sohrab. My heart breaks for people living in Afghanistan especially women. There is so much injustice and cruelty happening in that country and is being justified by using a religion that's main message is to spread love. This novel highlighted that Amir, Hassan and Sohrab's story is more than that. It's the reality and nobody is doing anything about it.

The relationships in this book are thoughtfully built and realistically unraveled and rebuilt, especially that of Amir and Baba.  There are so many layers to the story - parent/child, friends, mentors, cultures - all in a backdrop of a real war. All seamlessly woven together by the author’s ability to refer back to something earlier in the book to keep the reader from losing track of what had happened. A study in perspective and forgiveness. “For you, a thousand times over”
