Exquisite writing and reflective evocation of the momentous political and historic changes of Italy’s Risorgimento, as the various competing kingdoms became a united country - and yet all documented from the point of view of an ageing Sicilian nobleman as he approaches death. Very moving, the author captures depth of thought in beautifully crafted prose, and creates a main character to be admired, honoured and respected.

A beautiful work of fiction, lovely prose and very evocative of the changes sweeping Italy at the time of the books setting. I very much enjoyed this but I think I will need to read it again to really appreciate it more, and maybe buff the rating up to 5. I am happy to have finally got around to it after it has been sitting on the bookshelves for a few years.

I would also like to check out the film version starring the late Burt Lancaster
