Absolutnie nie, chociaż trochę pozbawia to czytelników elementu zaskoczenia.
"Przeklęty kontrakt" to pierwsza część cyklu Kontrakt. Z jednej strony fajnie, bo ogólnie lubię cykle, ale nie mam zielonego pojęcia, co jeszcze można dopowiedzieć do tej historii, ponieważ po przeczytaniu zakończenia stwierdzam, że w zasadzie mogłaby to być jednotomówka. Jednak nie będę zagłębiać się w angielskie opisy kolejnych tomów, poczekam — być może zostaną wydane w Polsce, a jeżeli nawet nie to myślę, że historia Katharine i Richarda, i tak będzie dla mnie kompletna.
Ale zacznijmy od początku...
Katharine pracuje jako osobista sekretarka. Jedynym mankamentem tej pracy jest fakt, że ma naprawdę okropnego szefa, który ani razu nie był dla niej miły. Zanim zaczęła dla niego pracować, wiedziała, że przed nią miał on wiele sekretarek, które dość szybko rezygnowały z pracy. Dlaczego więc panna Elliot mimo licznych upokorzeń w dalszym ciągu trwa na stanowisku? Przyczyna jest dość prosta i przewidywalna — dlatego, że bardzo potrzebuje pieniędzy.
Richard VanRyan to mężczyzna, który bardzo źle znosi porażki. Jego głównym celem jest awans na stanowisko partnera w firmie, w której pracuje. Jednak gdy okazuje się, że jego przełożony, mimo jego ciężkiej pracy, po raz kolejny wybrał kogoś innego na to miejsce, postanowił odejść z firmy.
Jego przyjaciel, pracujący jako headhunter informuje go, że konkurencyjna firma potrzebuje kogoś z jego doświadczeniem i osiągnięciami. I pewnie Richard z miejsca dostałby tę posadę, gdyby nie fakt, że właściciel ponad wszystko ceni sobie wartości rodzinne, więc playboy taki jak Richard nie ma czego szukać w jego firmie.
Właśnie wtedy mężczyzna wpada na pomysł zaangażowania swojej sekretarki w tytułowy kontrakt. Richard proponuje Katharine, by razem z nim zwolniła się z poprzedniej pracy i udawała jego narzeczoną, by pomóc mu zdobyć posadę w firmie Grahama Gavina. Oczywiście proponuje jej również ogromne wynagrodzenie za udawanie jego ukochanej.
Dziewczyna z początku myśli, że Richard stroi sobie z niej żarty, jednak ostatecznie przyjmuje jego propozycję i zostaje jego fałszywą narzeczoną. I choć z początku ich relacja jest tylko popisem aktorskich umiejętności, to z czasem przeradza się w coś zgoła innego. W prawdziwe i silne uczucie, które spada na nich jak grom z jasnego nieba.

I truly did not like Richard, and then I loved him. Katy is a force, truly. She put up with so much and deserves the world. Both of their histories are SO SAD. I am glad that they got their HEA.
Melanie really knows how to conjure up some tears, though—depressing! This is the second book I have read where there is an older character in a home, and I AM SAD. But I loved the books I have read by her. I can’t wait to continue reading this series and seeing how Richard and Katy live their lives!

Cheesy loveliness!
I loved this story! It reads like one of the many Harlequin love stories I used to devour as a teenager, except more detailed and extensive, and therefore, even better. Richard is an advertisement executive who has just been passed over as partner in his company. Being a very ambitious man, he's extremely pissed, more because he was tricked out of the partnership. He decides to get even, getting a job at a competing agency. The problem is, this agency is run by a successful executive who stresses on family values, and Richard has a reputation as "a Dick". Therefore he needs a girlfriend who will make him seem tamer and more suited to the role. Enter his PA, Katherine. He has been a jerk to her, demeaning, insulting, inconsiderate. Yet, when he offers her the "job" as his fiancee with all the monetary gains she will receive, she takes the job because she badly needs the money to pay the home where her aunt Penny lives. Thus starts the trip down domesticated lane for Richard and Katy. Richard gets a lot of surprises from Katy, and the jolts do a good work of awakening hidden emotions from Richard's withered and frozen heart. It was a great story, a little cheesy at parts, but very enjoyable. Some of their dialogues were priceless, where Katy put Richard in his place and left him speechless. It was like seeing a sturdy building topple down. I enjoyed the taming of the "Dick" a lot!

Thank you Melanie Moreland for appealing to the poet in my soul. Using beautiful words and emotional moments, The Contract reminds us to appreciate life's greatest moments and make them count. What stood out most for me was this piece of dialogue: " When you get older ... you realize life is made up of moments. All sorts of them. Sad ones, good ones, and great ones. They make up the tapestry that is your life. Hold on to all of them—especially the great ones. They make the others easy to take." That piece of wisdom gave me goosebumps that have yet to disappear. Richard, Katy and Penny are haunting characters in the most breathtaking of stories. My one regret is that I am just discovering this immensely talented author. Melanie Moreland made this moment count. What an impact it made.
