This is Rupi's take on her mom's experience as an immigrant. Really impacted me because as someone who's second language is English I really felt like I could relate to the pages on that book. I think its the book I've related to most in my life so there's that.

These poems are simple and palatable, and depending on what you ask from your poetry you may find that a good thing. Many of the shorter ones border on trite, but it helps that the entire collection comes across as wholeheartedly sincere rather than manipulative. The rawest poems, and therefore unsurprisingly my favourites, were the ones where the author processed her rape.

“i am the first woman in my lineage with freedom of choice. to craft her future whichever way i choose. say what is on my mind when i want to. without the whip of the lash. there are hundreds of firsts i am thankful for. that my mother and her mother and her mother did not have the privilege of feeling. what an honor”

I felt so seen from Rupi’s collection to her mother.

The book as a whole had lots of honest & relatable lines from a broken soul to true love to family to finding self confidence. Let the sunshine on your flowers 🌻

the only thing I don’t like from modern poetry or at least this author is when one sentence that isn’t that profound takes up a whole page “the road to changing the world is never-ending” doesn’t need an entire blank page. Some of the pages didn’t even have a cute drawing to makeup for the lack of content 😕

Poetry about SA, Immigration, love, selflove, motherhood and being a woman.
In general I enjoy reading about these things but the poetry was sometimes just one sentence and I just didn’t get it yk.
Like there was stuff I learned but in the end I didn’t really enjoy reading it.
