This is the first of Gail Bowen's book I have read however, this is book #19 in the Joanne Kilbourne Mysteries. I actually really enjoyed this mystery, it had some good twists and turns and had me wanting more. What was interesting was the mix of family drama and mystery as Joanne was helping write a screen-play based on her life and her friend's when they were young. There were a lot of characters to keep track of but if you've read some of the other novels I feel like you wouldn't be as lost sometimes. However, I feel like you can read this as a standalone story as the mystery was presented and solved within the book.

I love that this book was written by a Canadian Author and was set in Canada, it is always fun being able to recognize places and support local!

I will definetly be keeping my eyes out for others in the series to get to know Joanne and her family so much better!

Thank you ECW Press for this review copy, all opinions are my own.

First book I read in this series and won't surely be the last.
I loved the storytelling, the fleshed characters and the solid mystery that kept me guessing.
It's a gripping and highly entertaining read, highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

Gail has written another great Joanne Kilborn mystery. She keeps you guessing the whole time and keeps you wanting to turn the page to find out what will happen next.
I listened to the audiobook of this one and the narrator was amazing with her voice. She changed her voice for all the different characters and did a great job of it.
If you are a fan of the series, you will enjoy this latest instalment. Joanne gives us more insight into her life when she was a teen and we find out more about Taylor’s birth mom, Sally, in this story.
Joanne has agreed to let a mini series about her younger life be filmed, but tragedy strikes when the producer ends up dead. The whole production seems to be cursed. Will they ever get to finish the project and honour Sally’s and Roy, the dead producers, memories?

Joanne’s life has been fraught with despair and drama.  It’s for that reason a six-episode limited series is being developed on her life, friendship and childhood.  But, when the writer dies mysteriously and a series of events seeks to further derail the project, it seems more may be a stake than just a TV series.
The Unlocking Season provides readers an intimate look inside the production and dramatics of filmmaking and friendships.  This book takes readers into a theatrical world of chaos.  Who knew so much could go wrong? This read almost provides too much in depth and descriptive details on the innerworkings of the film industry as they become somewhat distracting from the underlying thrills, suspense and mystery.  But, ultimately the unwinding of the director’s mysterious death, how each character played a role, and the loveable family Joanne has created in adulthood win out for a pleasurable, if at times creepy, read.
