Really liked this book! It is an older book, from 1950, but I think well worth the trouble to track down a copy.

An extremely compelling read about an imposter trying to steal an inheritance and the family who welcome him back. Tey is less interested in the idea of the crime as a puzzle and more in the psychology of people involved in a crime. She's also an acute observer of English ideas about class. There's a couple of weaknesses to the book - it has an abrupt ending and the time period it's set in is extremely unclear (WWII seems to have happened, but not really left any lasting mark on British society) - but the characters are so convincing that it's easy to gloss over these issues.

I wasn't sure about reading this one as it's not part of the Inspector Grant series. So I gave it a few pages to see if I was interested. And I was. The reversal of the expected protagonist/antagonist roles is pretty great. Even if I had a hard time believing in the evil doer. Luckily we don't spend time in his head. Lots of good horse stuff in here too. The 'breeding will out' message is not my favorite, luckily there are other things going on.
Tey is a wonderful writer. She depicts a certain sort of English village life beautifully. I felt like I was there with the family and the horses. Her characters are well-developed and believable in their actions.
One major niggle I had about this book was the timeline. I'm so confused! I assume the novel was meant to have a current day setting when it was published in 1949 yet there is almost no mention of the recent war. Where are the ration books? How is Brat able to easily buy a whole new wardrobe? Why wouldn't Brat have tried to enlist in the military at some point? The period seemed more like it was between the wars yet there were 2 small references to WWII so it wasn't the 1930s. Hmmmm.

Very predictable. I had to read this for a school assignment and I didn't enjoy it at all.
Read this because it was made into a movie with my favourite (at the time) actor...Oliver Reed.
