This is an old favorite of mind which I re-read every year or two. It is the grandmother of all impersonation stories--the one all the others try (and generally fail!) to live up to. This is by far the best of Josephine Tey's novels, as well (I have read all of hers). This one is brilliantly written with believable and likable characters, and it delves into questions of what is right and what is wrong and what should be sacrificed in the name of justice. I think perhaps it appeals to me particularly just now in the current political climate in which so very many people want to assert their right to do evil in the name of their own personal well-being.

Such an excellent book. Published in 1949 but timeless, still read today.
I love how the author so successfully, so innovatively, breaks the conventions of her day. Here with a twin/false identity story where the falseness is known from the start, the crux of the mystery is easy enough to guess, a happy ending is rushed, and still I wanted to devour every word.

An historical fiction mystery set on a horse farm. Patrick Ashby was the heir to a fortune, but he disappeared when he was young and now his brother is next in line to inherit. When someone turns up claiming to be the long lost Patrick, he seems to good to be true - and he is. Everyone in the family believes Brat is Patrick, except his brother. Then Brat's presence begins to stir up old secrets. Is it possible Brat is Patrick after all? A fun mystery with an interesting conclusion.
I rated this how I thought about it while/right after reading it, rather than after thinking about it too hard, which would lower it a quarter or half a point. After all, we never actually find out exactly HOW the murder was done, unless I seriously missed something, and the family's reaction to their dead child coming back to life was a bit... surprisingly tame. Also, that one plotline was weirdly incesty. But while reading it I had an absolute ball once I stopped thinking of it as a mystery and started thinking of it as more of an Ethel Lina White style thriller (crossed with "National Velvet but with rich people"), where stuff just happens in a row somewhat mysteriously but not impenetrably. What actually happened here was pretty obvious from quite early on, but the whole thing was presented entertainingly and unusually enough that it was still a blast.
I could picture an A24-type period movie being made out of this with the weird pseudo-incest bit (and possibly some early-on vibes that came across as a bit queer coded) amplified, which only somewhat plays into my rating here but does at least entertain me conceptually.

Someone told me to read this completely unspoiled and I’m so glad I did! Really twisty and enjoyable.
I started reading this as a sprint hosted by noteworthy fiction-Nicole on Saturday and I could not put it down until I had finished it. For me this was a page turner and I loved every minute I spent reading it. Published in 1949 this mystery novel has been made into some visual works and if they followed the plot no doubt was enjoyed by many.
We start out with a foundling who is raised in an orphanage and has no family background... he leaves it, travels to different countries and seems to be searching for where he fits in the scheme of things. He meets someone who entices our protagonist to pretend he is someone who disappeared when he was twelve, a twin in fact and inserts himself into the family of the lost boy believed death.
The plot thickens and is brilliantly paced to keep the reader interested in every scene from beginning to end. I could not help myself in theorizing where the author was taking me in this mystery.

Вот человек похожий на будущего наследника состояния и поместья и его можно выдать за его брата близнеца, который считается погибшим, но точных доказательств, если присмотреться, его смерти нет. И вот уже натасканный мальчик из приюта является пред очи семьи. Казалось бы люди должны относиться к нему насторожено, так в самом начале и происходит, но не долго потому что юноша оказывается искренним в своих чувствах, добрым, интересующимся. И он покоряет каждого члена семьи, конюхов, жителей деревеньки, даже адвокатов. И все было бы в его жизни хорошо, если бы не странное поведение "брата". Почему он так упорствует в неверии, почему так относится к "найденышу"? Не думаю, что для вас станет сюрпризом причина, но важно именно то, как ведет себя Брет. Что он понимая к чему приведут его действия не останавливается. Он должен не только знать и подтвердить, он должен поведать правду ибо она важна. Важна "его семье". Одно дело когда ты стремишься к любви, к теплу, его мотивация очень понятна, все же он вырос в приюте и семьи у него не было, и он согласен ее потерять вместе со всеми деньгами, важно защитить СЕМЬЮ.
Расследования большого тут не будет. И это понятно, со дня пропажи прошло много лет и все уже смирились с тем, что им ничего не известно. Но следить за человеческими переживаниями, решениями - это очень интересно. И в конце книги оказывается, что обаятельный, как бы там ни было, но мошенник, тебе нравится, ты за него переживаешь и даже где-то от счастья всплакнешь.
Характеры героев выписаны дивно точно, так же как и следствия поведения людей. Вот что прекрасно в художественной литературе - это увидеть как влияют поступки, как видят вас люди в них, чем мотивируются действия людей. Все равно что в голову человеку заглянуть. На этом и учишься. И вот казалось бы детектив, жанр литературы легонький))), но не бесполезный! Главное то, как вы читаете и про что)
Мне повествование понравилось, так что я лично советую эту историю прочитать, даже любителям детективов, не всегда же досконально и по времени выслеживать убийцу)

What a clever, clever story! I watched the BBC series in the 1980s and have always wanted to read the book. It didn’t disappoint. It’s a charming glimpse at the life of the English gentry in the post-WWII era and a look at the close ties of family who love each other.
I remember being floored at the twist when I watched it on TV. It’s just as twisty in the book and I’d never have seen it coming. That said, knowing the story already, I enjoyed the tiny clues.
The most exciting scenes are, perhaps surprisingly, at a horse show, not when anything nefarious is happening. All the family members are performing in one way or another. It’s written in a way that non-horse people like myself can easily understand what’s going on and what’s at stake.
The whole book is an absolute delight.
