So, My Throat Is an Open Grave was such an interesting read! I went into it expecting some intense, heart-pounding horror, but it ended up being more subtle than that. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a dark, eerie vibe running through the whole thing, but it wasn’t the in-your-face horror I thought I’d get. And honestly? I still loved it.

The story’s atmosphere really pulls you in—it’s more about the tension and the slow-burn creepiness that gets under your skin. It’s haunting in a quieter way, which I ended up really appreciating. The writing is beautiful, and I found myself completely wrapped up in the characters and the twisted mystery they were navigating.

What I enjoyed most was how it plays with your expectations. You keep thinking something huge and terrifying is just around the corner, and while it may not go full horror-mode, the tension and the dark undertones make it hard to put down. The way it leaves you feeling unsettled is what I ended up loving the most!

If you’re looking for a book that’s more of a slow, eerie build rather than jump-scares, My Throat Is an Open Grave delivers in spades. It’s one of those reads that sticks with you, even if it didn’t have the outright horror I was expecting. It's definitely a unique experience, and I’d recommend it for anyone who enjoys a darker, more atmospheric story.

I loved this book. It came at exactly the right moment for me. The mix of folk horror and romance/redemption gels perfectly with my sense of what it is to be someone recovering from shame. This is a piece of art that speaks to me in unconscious ways. Every time I read I came away emotional, sometimes teary, always feeling that it was drawing out the pain like an ointment. I so appreciated the love and kindness and reliability of the town and the Lord of the Woods. Beautiful. The perfect length for what it had to say. Will most certainly re-read.

The world building in this book was subpar, but I really enjoyed the ending. So I guess that's the only reason why I gave it three stars.
