This was weird, dark, had big fae energy! Reminded me a lot of Together We Rot and House of Hollow in its vibes, if you’ve read either of those def give this a go. Wasn’t actually expecting the twist at the end of this but really loved it and how it was handled!! Easy 3.5* read! Leah was an interesting MC, a truly flawed character and I loved her perspective a LOT and the use of memories in this really added to the story and the horror!

4.75 stars -- I have been a Tori Bovalino fan since The Devil Makes Three and with every book she's written I find lots to like. Folk horror is one of my favorite genres in any type of media, so I have been so excited about this one.

I loved it. The tale did not go how I thought it would, but it was even better than I could have predicted. This was at times a body horror, grotesque little horror book, and at other times, a found-family, what-it-means-to-exist-in-a-safe-space book. The juxtaposition of how a small, religious community can stifle a girl like Leah in comparison to how The Lord of the Wood's community helped her was really well done.

I liked the tone of this book a lot, especially when we get into how Leah's rage and even acceptance over her life comes to a pinnacle towards the end of this book. Some of the twists I didn't see coming but I am glad I didn't. The ending was very satisfying and I wish we could get a bonus epilogue just so I could know more :) I think we all need more ya folk horror books like this!

If you like folk horror, a dash of romance, a found-family community, and vengeful ghosts (and teenage girls), read this book!!

Something about this book made me feel seen in a way I wasn’t expecting despite not sharing the circumstances of Leah.

Edit: rating changed from 4.25 to 4.75 because I cannot stop thinking about this book.
