I always enjoy this author's books, but whilst I loved the first half of this one, I found the second half a little disappointing and things wrapped up a bit too neatly for me.

A 9 year old girl is reported missing and as each chapter (told from a different character's point of view) progresses we learn a key secret every time - literally everyone is lying.  Did Avery disappear on her way home from school?  Was she at home?  Was she seen getting into an older boy's car?

Once the guilty party is revealed that's when the story loses momentum in my opinion, the chapters were less tightly written and tense and it becomes more about when the police will twig to something that we as reader alreadys know.

I will definitely continue to read this author, but not my favourite book of its kind.

Let me preface this with saying that I LOVE this author and her work. She writes books that keep you hooked and the story interesting. That said, she also adds heavy topics to her stories and the books don’t come with TW’s. I am writing this to you as fairly as I can based solely on the storyline, but I feel like with any book like this, the reviewer may have a bias.

The town of Stanhope is about to take you on a WILD ride. Follow along as they uncover SO many secrets on the search for a missing little girl. A little girl, I might add, for sure has oppositional defiance disorder among other more severe things. This book was full of twists and turns and as things unfolded it got creepier and freakier.

First read of 2024 did not disappoint. This book truly had me on the edge of my seat, the twist at the end was not what I was expecting and it was definitely delivered in a way that I did not see coming.

What started out as the mystery of what happened to Avery soon becomes a really unnerving book as it becomes clear both Marion and Avery are very dangerous and it was almost a game or cat and mouse with Avery being a psychopath who enjoyed manipulating people and Marion was in love with her father and wanted revenge on his mistress. All the different characters and storylines were interesting but it did all feel a bit to far fetched and I was waiting for something more from the detectives which didn't seem to come. The ending was so frustrating as Avery had got caught in her lies but we didn't see the reveal or the consequences. I was also waiting for more from rhe storyline of Gil and Nora as why was he so obsessed with following her and thinking about killing her but ultimately nothing happened.
