I wish I liked this book a lot more than I do. As soon as I realized what was going on, I knew what was going to happen, just not how - and I REALLY and TRULY hate that for me because this was a fun book to listen to, and really well written.

If you like victim blaming and holding children accountable for the way adults abuse them, you’ll love this. There’s also a healthy dose of ableism.

It had me intrigued but the writing style made me quite detached from the characters and it felt a bit unrealistic.

2 stars because the first two thirds of the book kept me interested, but once the "twist" occurred, it all fell apart for me.

The major players were woefully unlikeable except for poor Michael. Avery was absolutely deplorable; no 9 year old would ever have the cognitive ability to act or talk the way she did. It was just completely unrealistic especially
her interactions with Marion.
And I felt like we could've learned more about Gully, but the author was more concerned with moving the plot forward than character development.

As for the ending, I was disappointed and felt like it was rushed. It made zero sense to me. I don't understand why the parents would ever agree to
Avery doing an interview, especially when they didn't want anything to do with the press.
You are the parent! Parent your
psychopath!
Ugh.

A solid 3.75. Oh gosh. This is my second Shari Lapena book and the way she makes her characters just SOOOO dislike-able. Fucking skills there. I deadass want to give this book a 1 star because fuck the characters but also the plot? Ma’am. Shari. Ma’am. It’s well written. Just like how you’ll hate a character in a show or a movie, but that just shows what an amazing actor the person is.

Anyways. LOL what a dumpster fire I read. It was a great dumpster fire that kept me warm. 😂
