I love Shari Lapena’s work, despite every book following the same plot line over and over.
I didn’t see Avery hiding out in Marian’s basement, so that was a fun twist.
Everything else was fairly predictable, though it was a fun read. What WASNT fun was the ending. I can’t remember if Lapena has ended a book so abruptly before with no resolution. I was flipping through the pages looking for the next chapter, or maybe a sneak peek at the next book. So frustrating! I literally closed the book with a “wtf!” All in all, I enjoyed reading this one, but I wouldn’t recommend it compared to her others. She always follows the same tropes, so you know what to expect.

Oooh girl, everyone here is lying. This little girl needs SOME kind of help because she is a whole mess. I really wasn't sure what was going to happen here. I like books where everyone is kind of a terrible person, and you're just trying to work out who is the terrible-est.

I was hooked from the beginning. Honestly this might be my favorite book by Shari Lapena (so far).
The plot twist was unexpected but I had trouble believing Avery's narrative, it just didn't feel very realistic.

I read this in less than 24hours because I wanted to know what happened to Avery and who took her, so badly. I was completely drawn in.
Shari Lapena leads you deliberately to false conclusions and just when you think you've figured out what happened she pulls the rug out from under you. There is the tiniest bit of foreshadowing but it is very easy to miss or second guess after being fooled so many times.
Eventually when you finally figure it out, it's revealed within a couple of pages. But you have the who, you definitely don't have the how and the why though even though you think you do. Then a new set of problems are presented. You'll end up not feeling sympathy for the people you think you will. This is an emotional rollercoaster.
The ending, by the way is perfect, extremely satisfying. Lapena leaves absolutely no loose ends. Just for that alone it gets 5 stars from me.
