I really liked this book! It was my first foray into reading about Irish history and I feel like I've learned loads. One of the things I really enjoyed about the book was that it, above all, is really an examination of the national Irish psyche over the last 80ish years. It dives into economic policies and the role of the Catholic Church but always grounds itself in how these acts affect Irish people. This is in part due to O'Toole's own recollections sprinkled in the narrative. While this is firmly a nonfiction, historical book, it feels alive in a way that many others don't.
