Sebastian's writing is amazing, but that goes without saying for anyone who has read his work before. He always creates a vivid world and this book is no exception.

Talking about the plot without any major spoilers, this book is heavy on the hurt/comfort. I'm used to reading books that use this trope once in the book, but reading it so many times in different ways made this story THE hurt/comfort book.

The way the author handles the class difference between the main characters and what that means for a future together is very smart and never banal.

The PINING. That's all I have to say. It was the best kind of torture.

His reimagining of Venice is a thrilling mixture of real history and his own ideas. It's clear that he respected and studied the Republic of Venice's history before writing this book (the characters' names! He used actual Italian names that also make sense for the time period. From an Italian reader: thank you! Also, Italian words are perfectly used, it never got me out of the story).

I can probably go on with praises about this story, but this is all I need to say: Give this book a chance, it's worth it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
