Common Azzarello L

Even in an explicitly non-canon, "adult" imprint that only had a few books, Startling Stories, Brian Azzarello is such a bad fit for Marvel. This was written around the time of the Bruce Jones Hulk run, and feels like the first two arcs of that but soiled by deliberately ugly art, and sheer contempt for humanity. Cynicism and nihilism in place of depth. Most of it is just crappy action and then Bruce feeling bad for a page or two until something absurdly cruel that would never happen makes him angry. Doc Samson throws out a line about the military lying that Hulk's rampages were "natural disasters" to reassure people that this is just God's plan. Or something. Well this God must be a REAL asshole then. The moments of introspection have been done before and done far better by writers with a better grasp on the character like Peter David and Al Ewing.

The only positive is how brisk the thing is. I read it all in 12 minutes. But those are 12 minutes of my life I will never get back.

Just read Hulk: The End, hell those first two arcs of Bruce Jones Hulk are way better, check those out online. But this? This is radioactive, stay FAR AWAY.

A swift and simple read that has a bleak outlook on Banner’s fate as the unenviable cage of the Hulk. Corben’s art lends a macabre feel to the Jekyll & Hyde nature of the Hulk mythos.
