DNF: I wanted so badly to like and get into this book, but I found it confusing and difficult to follow. Eventually I just gave up on it.

Interesting but totally unclear what is happening or why it is happening. Waaay to over complicated. Also it feels like it’s constantly a retelling of other stories or myths, but I think it’s actually not. Or maybe it’s about world building, but I’m not convinced the world is clearly built either.

This book made me feel so completely DIZZY - I absolutely HATED parts of it (especially the first chunk, which reads like very heavy, dull literary fiction), but then I loved other parts. I wish we'd had more complex, interesting worldbuilding; I wish the ending hadn't been wrapped up so quickly and easily after everything we went through to get there; and I'm sad that One Particular Thing was not explained or fixed, when it's such a tragic, scary thing hanging over the happy ending.

But I can't deny that I really enjoyed other parts, that certain passages and flashbacks enchanted me, that I was rooting so hard for some of the characters, that the epilogue made me SO HAPPY. And even the parts I didn't enjoy, I think I know what Knox was trying to do with them, and can grudgingly appreciate what she was going for.

Gah. So hard to rate. And who to recommend it to? People who want their fantasy to read like literary fiction, I guess, and who don't want or need a lot of dramatic action sequences, but still want that feeling of deep awe.

Don't know how to put it better than that.

I got about a quarter of the way through this and just kind of lost interest. There’s a point where a lot of things start happening and there’s not quite enough explanation for me, at least so far. I also am not particularly interested in the mystery that’s (somewhat) set up before that point so there was no real driver for me to keep going.

I felt like I was in a dream the whole time I was reading this book and while there were a few moments of "wow that's pretty cool!", they don't quite make up for the pages and pages of... not quite nothing, but not much more than that.

A genuinely terrific book, full of all sorts of stuff and many many levels. Thought provoking, engaging, exciting, magical. My only tiny peeve is… Jacob. What’s he all about?

My review is that I want my friends to read this book so we can talk about this book.
