I am not a big fan of romance books, but Nicola Yoon makes me think I might be a fan of a certain subset of them. Loved this for its humor, its wonderful banter, its twist. Well-written and touching. Definitely will be reading more of her books!

All of Yoon’s books have made me full on ugly cry so if you’re ready to have your heart broken (in the best way of course) Instructions for Dancing needs to be on your radar!

Quick Synopsis: Evie no longer believes in love, especially after she starts seeing visions of how random couples begin and end their love affairs. In an effort to understand her visions, she finds herself at a dance studio entering a competition and falling in love with X, forcing her to question if love is worth the risk.

This is one of those books that I read at just the right time, and the message was exactly what I needed to hear. Nicola Yoon is an expert at tugging at my heartstrings. I loved all of the characters and their backstories, the romance wasn’t cheesy, and call me crazy, but the ugly cry felt good. This is definitely my favorite of hers and one of my favorite YA books of the year!

Favorite Quote: “If you get very very lucky in this life, then you get to love another person so hard and so completely that when you lose them, it rips you apart. I think the pain is proof of a life well lived and loved.“

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

If you’re in the mood to have a good cry, believe in the power of love, and enjoy YA romance, you should absolutely pick this one up.

Instructions for Dancing was a beautiful and heartfelt read that took me on an emotional rollercoaster. Evie’s journey was a mix of magic, love, and self-discovery, and I was hooked from the very beginning. Her ability to see the future of relationships was such a unique concept—it really made me think about what I would do with a power like that. Honestly, I don’t think I could handle knowing how things would end!

One of the standout moments for me was Evie’s realization about her mom and dad’s relationship. It reminded me how complex love can be and how people sometimes need to make tough choices to move forward. It felt real and raw, and I appreciated how it was handled with so much care.

I’m not a fan of sad endings, but I liked how Nicola Yoon didn’t make us experience the sadness in real time. Instead, we got a glimpse of what was coming at the end, but it wasn’t as heavy as it could’ve been. It allowed the story to end on a bittersweet note without being overwhelming.

The romance between Evie and X was absolutely swoon-worthy! Their chemistry was electric, and their dance scenes had me grinning from ear to ear. While some parts felt predictable, the emotional depth and magical realism made up for it.

This book is a reminder that love, no matter how it ends, is always worth the risk.
