I LOVED this book! Blue and Kellan were characters that I completely fell in love with, and I’m so sad that I finished reading their book. The characterization of these two was well-layered, and I found myself reading as quickly as I could, not just for the development of the story, but so I could get to know these two multi-faceted characters better. And the story! The pacing of the story was perfect, and I found myself reading every chance I had because it was so hard to put down! I loved how the elements of the Cinderella fairytale were woven throughout the story; this was both an amazing retelling and a wonderful story, and I’m so glad I read it!

I HIGHLY recommend this book. And all the other ones in the series, because they are amazing too! I can’t wait to see what C. J. Redwine publishes next!

i went into this not knowing anything about it (because that's a think i like to do with audio books) and i was not disappointed!

while – at least to me – it wasn't a retelling of one particular fairy tale, it alluded to a few different ones and those moments always made me smile (expect for that one time. i was disturbed.)

blue and kellan's relationship? 10/10, never been done before, breathtaking, absolutely extraordinary. i would die for them. childhood enemies to lovers? i love to see it. all their interactions felt really natural and considering that a) the book isn't that long, b) there's a lot of other plot and c) it's a standalone, their relationship was developed so beautifully. to try to quote how german fairy tales end - and if they haven't died, they're living still (it sounds better in german).

oh, i loved the magic. it wasn't super complicated, just typical fairy tale magic - you have a wand, you have potions, you have plants, you have witches. something we need more of in fantasy. sometimes, simple is better.

i thought i knew where the plot was heading and i was on the right track but the ending still really surprised me, it was a really unique plot twist imo.

the main reason i wanted to write this review is nessa. nessa is kellan's younger sister and she can't speak. noone knows why and most people just accept her as she is and treat her with respect. without going into too much detail, this plot point is really close to my heart. it's something that's too rarely depicted in fiction and this portrayal was everything i could have wanted it to be. it was a really nice surprise <3

tl;dr: there's a good mix of relationship drama, political intrigue and magic use, just how i like my middle ages-esque fantasies.
