The first book in this series was THE. BEST. The second and third kinda made me iffy about furthering this series. And this one REMINDED ME WHY I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH. I'm not a huge fan of Cinderella period, but this one definitely surprised me.

Blue and Kellan have hated each other for as long as they can remember. Funny that Kellan is the crown prince of their town.Their parents have always been good friends, but instead of them becoming friends too, they fought. But the day comes for Kellan to find a bride and just as he begins looking at people, strange things begin to happen all over the town. So they must work together to ensure that they find the truth. All their working together has started to bring out feelings they didn't even know they had.

This time, my only problem with this book was the fact that it seemed just really long. It seemed like it was full of exaggerated descriptors and long drawn out scenes. I felt like I was reading it forever. I can normally finish two books in the amount of time it took me to read this one. I found myself putting the book down multiple times and even thinking about reading something else when I still had about half the book left.

As for the re-telling, I was really surprised at the twists and turns in this one. As I said, Cinderella has never been my favorite fairy tale. But I have to say, this one was cool. All the elements were there and slipped in at really interesting places. And I have to say, I wasn't at all sure how they were going to do the ending, but it was a funny interesting twist. Not exactly what I was looking for, but it made sense to go with that. But then there was the evil stepmother and let me just say, the villain in this one was so bad she was good!

As for the romance, I wasn't that impressed. Like with most fairy tales, they seemed to be not in love in one chapter and then realizing that they love each other by the next. Because its like that for most fairy tales, I let it go. I won't hold it against the book for being a re-telling.

This re-telling has its faults, but its still a solid one. I can definitely say this one made me excited to read this story again. I'm super interested in seeing if there's more to this series and what fairy tale she will use next. (I REALLY hope its the "twins!") I hope she doesn't cut this as soon as I get sucked back into it! I still need a Beauty and the Beast one lol I hope everyone else who reads this feels the magic and adventure that I felt while reading this one too!

So, this was totally not what I expected from a Cinderella retelling, by that made it all the more exciting and entertaining. The connection between Blue and Kellan is so sweet - I enjoyed their enemies to lovers journey.

There were a lot of really well written characters in this story (I'm a sucker for a really interesting character - good or bad) and the world itself is phenomenal - possibly because this is number four in the RAVENSPIRE world. This was my first RAVENSPIRE novel, but everything made sense anyway - it being a standalone. However, I have been told it's better to read the four in order. Hansel and Gretel return, and there's mention of Javan from The Traitor Prince, so I'll have to do some back reading soon!

Now, back to the Cinderella story...I wasn't sure how it was going to be in any way connected, but we do get the evil 'stepmother,' stepsisters, and fairy grandmother. It's really only loosely related as far as retellings go, but enough so that you can see the main elements of the fairytale. My favorite part was Blue's power and inner strength. She is such a wonderful character who would have your back when you need her to be there for you. Her potions instructions to Nessa (Kellan's younger sister; also deaf) border are really sweet. Their friendship was unorthodox, yet beautiful. I loved that Blue learned sign language to be able to communicate with Nessa.

Something we soon discover is Blue has magic. She's something of an alchemist in her fathers apothecary shop, but her alchemy is more advanced thanks to the Fae blood that runs in her veins. She gets that from her mother's lineage - so, yes, Grandmere also has magic. When a seedy character gets into some trouble after realizing Blue may be able to create gold, some really sordid events are set in motion. Also, magic has been outlawed since the town discovered there was a blood wraith in their midst that had been feeding on the blood of children. It was Blue's mother who locked it away.

Finally, Kellan, our prince of the land. He's an interesting character. He has his flaws and a few haunting memories, but also a really good heart. When he returns home from boarding school, all he wants is to get out again, but it's time for him to grow up, choose a wife, and be the king. He knows he won't get to choose someone based on love, but rather needs to choose someone who will be able to give the kingdom a good alliance. So, one of the main families of the city would have to do. He becomes a major part of uncovering what's happening to the girls and who's taking the homeless children, as well as keeping Blue safe from her new guardian. A regular knight in shining armor ...swoon.

I was completely engrossed in this story start to finish and will definitely be reading the others. Definitely a FIVE STAR read for me.

It's not bad or problematic or anything. I loved Kellan, too. But I think retellings are not for me(?). Unless they have something new and intriguing and cool, I find it ..boring. And the last straw that made me dnf-ed it was the stupid decision Blue made to help Dinah (the stepmother in this whole Cinderella thing). I know that it was necessary for that to happen. But I thought she would be forced to do so. Unfortunately, she voluntarily want to help Dinah. I understand that she did that to help Halette, but.. that's just stupid. And why wasn't she more suspicious of Dinah?
