Oh, but this was a joy. A standout among Kristan Higgins romances, all of which are arguably charming. But CATCH OF THE DAY just has a little something extra in it. It's hard to pinpoint what, exactly. Is it the setting of Gideon's Cove, which celebrates the eccentricities and tight-knitted community that has been romanticized about American small town culture for forever? Is it Malone and Maggie's atypical romance, which initially smolders, unbeknownst to all, and all of a sudden catches fire? Whatever it is, it carries this whole story so well. I can't wait to return to Gideon's Cove someday.

I can definitely see how Higgins' writing has improved over time by going back and reading this earlier book. This definitely could've been trimmed down a bit, as there was a lot of repetitive moments showing how obsessed Maggie was with Father Tim and how she was such a good little volunteer.

There was definitely not enough Malone--not that I really loved him as a character, per se, but as this was primarily a romance, I felt like we should see a BIT more of one half of the equation. Especially because too much time spent with Maggie left me feeling depressed; I get it, you want a family, you want a companion, please stop beating me over the head with it.

I didn't really buy the idea that Maggie was in love with Malone by the end...she kept saying how she barely knew him, and that was still true! Oooh, he finally told her his first name; well there's the deepest darkest secret you can share. He was such a blank slate, and I don't think any of his physical quirks really gave us any of his deeper emotions, being that Higgins chose to describe him constantly looking as stoic as a stone with just a tiny quirk of the mouth giving him any hint of an expression. Hold on to your panties, ladies. Maggie was painted as such a desperate person throughout the entire book that by the end I think she just glommed onto Malone because he took was the only one who took interest in her physically more than because she actually 'fell in love with him'.

Also, seriously, Higgins,
Spoilerkilling off her dog??? Why did we have to go there?? I didn't even care about this book and I was still sobbing for that entire couple of chapters because who can help but place themselves and their dog in that situation?
I almost put the book down right there.

The few things I did like was the quaint small town and fleshed out side characters, which is always something I feel Higgins does well. It makes it feel like more than 'just' a romance book, which I like.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. Maggie was such a great character, full of flaws but totally lovable. A perfect fluffy beach book & the ending was awesome.

Catch of the Day is another good read from Kristan Higgins. Unbeknownst to me beforehand but Catch of the Day involves characters that will pop up again in a secondary role in [b:Somebody To Love|12929918|Somebody To Love|Kristan Higgins|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328979422s/12929918.jpg|18085671]. Then other secondary character from Somebody to Love also appear in the main role in [b:The Next Best Thing|6766430|The Next Best Thing|Kristan Higgins|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1259128888s/6766430.jpg|6965083]. I like that these three books are intertwined. Catch was released first, followed by Next Best, then by Somebody. I would recommend reading them in that order if possible.

Catch of the Day follows Maggie Beaumont a diner owner in the small town of Gideon's Cove, Maine. Maggie does not have the best of luck in love and relationships. In fact, the town is still bringing up the fact that Maggie fell in love with a Priest (before she knew he was a Priest that is). Maggie knows that she cannot have feelings for a Priest because it cannot and will not ever go anywhere. But her friends, family, and yes, even Father Tim are ready to fix her up on some blind dates.

This is a typical Kristan Higgins book. I really liked the chemistry between Maggie and Malone. I thought that Higgins paced their relationship pretty good.

I think this was the last book of hers that I hadn't read yet so now I've got to wait until a new one comes out.

In love with this book. A crazy woman in love with a priest... A classically unavailable male! Also, A quiet fisherman who has the makings of a serial killer in love with her, but she doesn't realize it. The lack of communication causes the crazy girl to jump to conclusions that are laughable, yet similar to my own life!

Catch of the Day by Kristin Higgins
Maggie is in love with a priest, Father Tim. She Lives in Gideon Cove, Maine, just over 400 residents a year.
Owns and works at Jo's Diner and meets everybody that comes in so maybe she can get a date. Volunteer a lot also.
After going off the road and diving off her bike cut leg and it started to rain. Malone is the one who picked her up, he's her brothers friend, a lobster man
Maybe if she dates other it'll take her mind off the priest...
She has an identical twin and they think the same thing without talking. When Suzie changes her hair style the next time they see one another the other twin has done the same.
She does hook up with Malone and others find out and tease her. There are mysteries about him as it's said he beat up his wife and that's why she took off.
Others see her job at the diner as a chore but she finds the community needs her and she needs them...
Love the 'ah yea' dialect of a strong New England accent.
Sad to hear of her dog and his mishap but others are there to help her through it. Love when the priest tips off others that she's looking for a date.
Love the carnival and the events there.
When Malone is accused of being the father of Chantell's baby and now owning up to it, somebody cuts all his lines to his pots.
Maggie thinks the priest is the father. What a mess and trying to solve and fix everything is gonna be a mess.
What an amazing read this book is, light but kept my interest.

I have so many friends who enjoy Higgins' work, but this is the third book of hers I've read and I'm giving in to the fact that it's just not for me. Her heroines make the most ridiculous decisions. I seriously can not take these people seriously.
